What if the way you experience stress, anxiety and even chronic pain isn't just in your head, but rooted in your nervous system? It is a question I have been sitting with for a long time, and it is exactly the one Jessica Maguire has built her career on answering.
Jessica is a physiotherapist, TEDx speaker and nervous system educator who has dedicated her work to helping people understand how past experiences shape the body's ability to regulate itself, and, more importantly, how we can retrain it to feel safe again.
I first discovered her work on Instagram during my own deep dive into nervous system regulation. Her insights resonated immediately. She has a way of explaining complex science that is not only accessible but genuinely transformative. After signing up for her vagus nerve masterclass, I knew I had to learn more. So while in Byron Bay, I sat down with Jessica in the tranquil garden of Three Meadows to talk about the mind-body connection, trauma and the science of healing.
How Trauma Imprints on the Body
Jessica's journey is as personal as it is professional. After tragically losing two brothers, she experienced firsthand how trauma imprints on the body, manifesting as anxiety, burnout and physical symptoms like chronic pain and gut issues.
That experience led her to study the nervous system at a far deeper level, and eventually to create her Vagus Nerve Program and Nervous System Certification Course, which have now helped over 20,000 people worldwide. So much of what she teaches comes back to one reframe: the symptoms we are quick to label as weakness or dysfunction are often the body doing exactly what it learned to do to keep us safe.

The Three Nervous System States
One of the most useful frameworks Jessica shares is the idea of three nervous system states, and how we move between them. So many of us feel stuck in fight-or-flight, living in a near-constant state of threat without realising it.
In this episode we talk through what those states feel like from the inside, why the body gets caught in survival mode, and the practical steps we can take to shift from that heightened response back into calm and balance.
The Connection Between Stress, Gut Health and Chronic Pain
This is where it all comes together. Jessica explains how stress, gut health and chronic pain are not separate problems but expressions of the same underlying nervous system state.
The vagus nerve, which connects the brain and the gut, sits at the centre of that conversation. When we are dysregulated, digestion, pain perception and emotional resilience are all affected at once, which is why working at the level of the nervous system can change so much at the same time.
The Vagus Nerve and Emotional Resilience
We go deep on the role of the vagus nerve in emotional resilience, and Jessica shares simple techniques to self-regulate and feel more at home in your body. This is the work she has since distilled into her book, The Nervous System Reset, a practical guide to healing trauma and anxiety by retraining the body's stress response.
In this episode we cover:
- How trauma reshapes the nervous system, and how to retrain it
- The three nervous system states and how to shift between them
- The connection between stress, gut health and chronic pain
- The role of the vagus nerve in emotional resilience
- Simple techniques to self-regulate and feel at home in your body
This conversation is a must-listen for anyone who struggles with stress, anxiety or emotional overwhelm. If you have ever felt like you are constantly on edge, Jessica's insights could be the key to understanding, and finally shifting, your body's response to stress.
