Guy Sebastian on Identity, Inner Circles and Rebuilding Self-Worth

I've known Guy Sebastian for more than two decades. I've watched him go from the kid who won the very first season of Australian Idol to one of the most enduring artists this country has ever produced. And yet this conversation felt different.

We didn't sit down to talk about the records or the longevity. We sat down to talk about the quieter things. Survival. Self-trust. The courage it takes to live a balanced life in a world that never switches off. What follows is one of the most open conversations I've had on Beautiful Inside, and I left it thinking about my own life differently.

On the Pressure to Be Everything

"Trying to be everything to everyone is just a fast road to being unwell."

Guy is clear-eyed about the cost of people-pleasing. He talks about how early fame magnified a feeling he'd carried since childhood, that he was different, and how the instinct to keep everyone happy quietly became unsustainable. As he puts it, "I can't be everything to everyone and be a good friend." It's a line I keep coming back to.

On Being Manipulated, and the Fallout

"I felt like I was a monkey on a treadmill. I was constantly working, constantly away and very heavily manipulated."

This is the hardest chapter, and Guy doesn't dress it up. He describes a period of being manipulated at a deeply vulnerable point in his career, and the depression that followed. What struck me most was where the pain actually sat for him.

"The biggest thing that made me really blue and really sad was my opinion of myself, to be able to be that manipulated."

It wasn't the betrayal that floored him. It was what the betrayal made him believe about himself. Rebuilding from there, he says, had to happen from the inside out.

On Mental Health and Asking for Help

"I ask for help when I feel like I can't help myself."

For a man of his generation and profile to say that so plainly matters. Guy is honest about the version of masculinity that tells you to push through, and about learning the opposite the hard way.

"I learned the hard way that if I'm rendered useless, I can't help anybody."

He frames looking after himself not as indulgence but as the thing that lets him show up for everyone else.

On Protecting Your Inner Circle

"Life's about balance and doing what's good for you."

We talk about the noise of the digital age, the endless external input, and why shrinking your world down to a few trusted people can be an act of protection rather than withdrawal. Guy has clearly thought hard about who gets his energy, and why guarding it is non-negotiable now.

On Parenting in a Digital World

"I don't care if the other kids have it."

Becoming a father reordered everything. Guy is thoughtful about screens and boundaries, and refreshingly unbothered by the social pressure to give his boys what everyone else has. Much of this thinking flows into the youth mental health programs he and his wife Jules fund, work he speaks about with real purpose, having reached, in his words, "200 and something thousand kids."
